Supporting the Spiritual Life of a Child
For Our Youngest Children
We center on themes of love, relationship, and belonging. The biblical image of the Good Shepherd in John 10 is foundational, helping children encounter Jesus as one who knows them, calls them, and delights in them.
In this age group, children are invited into:
-
Hands-on material introducing the birth narratives of Jesus and basic parables inviting them to wonder about the kingdom of God as well as models helping them know Jesus as a real person
-
Materials about baptism and the Holy Eucharist inviting them to participate more fully in our church community’s life
-
Extra activities to help them calm and focus their bodies, take good care of our room, and express themselves with art
As Children Grow
As children mature, they become sensitive to moral issues and interested in learning more about the Bible and church. We support moral growth by discussing key sayings of Jesus as well as his parables about the moral life.
Children in this stage also experience:
-
A long ribbon timeline that reveals God’s unfolding plan for creation and invites them to consider their place within it
-
Reflection on the gifts of God found in nature and in human creativity
-
A deeper understanding of liturgical gestures, prayers, and the rhythm of worship
-
Opportunities to lead portions of our prayer table time
-
Continued formation in silence, reverence, care for one another and the world, and more advanced artistic work
The Atrium Experience
Every lesson includes carefully prepared, hands-on materials, whether models, figures, or art supplies. These allow children to immerse themselves at their own pace, responding freely and deepening their understanding.
Free-choice work and thoughtful projects create space for exploration and authentic expression. At times, we also move outdoors, connecting our learning to the beauty of God’s creation.
On Sunday Mornings
-
We invite families to arrive by 9:10 a.m., while honoring that each household has its own rhythm. Join us when you are able.
-
As you bring your child and sign them in, we ask for your help in maintaining the quiet, reflective tone of our space.
-
Please dress children in clothing that allows for full engagement in art, hands-on work, and outdoor exploration.
-
If your child has specific needs or preferences, we welcome your insight. Your partnership helps us support each child joyfully and thoughtfully.
Parents are always welcome in the Atrium. We simply ask that all who enter honor the calm, prayerful environment we cultivate for the children.
The Atrium is a sacred space and is open to children during their designated Sunday time. It is intentionally preserved as a place of focused work, prayer, and peace.
