A Goodbye from the Rev. Michael Singer

It’s time to say goodbye

During these last few days of June, I find myself once again packing my books and belongings to take home and making the long trip up to the attic to store these items until the next time. I am completing my 7th interim position since being a permanent rector. During this time, I’ve been blessed to meet some wonderful people, in diverse parishes, while learning something new in each place I’ve been called. St. Andrew’s is no different.

I am grateful to the vestry of St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound for your support and willingness to trust me in this time of shared ministry. I am grateful to the staff for willing to look at things in a different way, and not always saying, “But this is the way we do it at St. Andrew’s.” Most importantly, I am grateful to the people of St. Andrew’s for allowing me into your lives, for this ever-brief period of time. You have made me and Teresa feel welcome.

I’ve had a couple of conversations with Father BJ, your new rector. You are blessed to have called a good priest. Allow him to make mistakes. He and his family are new to St. Andrew’s, and new to Wilmington. He will step on some toes early in his ministry. We’ve all done it. Be forgiving. Allow him the grace to make changes. As you navigate the waters early in your relationship, support him in what he wants to do.

As a priest of 46 years, I know and understand the importance of boundaries. I’ve told Father BJ that I won’t call him, but if he needs to contact me, he is welcome to do so. I will stay away from this parish for at least a year, allowing you and your new rector to get to know one another, and develop your relationship.

God has great things in store for St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound. I eagerly await hearing about many of the exciting things God has planned for you. Somethings need to stay the same and somethings need to change.

Remember a few weeks ago, the Church celebrated the feast of Pentecost. Everyone attending our worship services that day received a small bottle of bubbles. When you opened the bottle, you saw a clear liquid.  When you add your breath to it, it added life, just as the Holy Spirit adds life. You can’t control how the bubbles move through the air. Without the breath of the Holy Spirit, we aren’t much of anything.  My prayer for you is that the Holy Spirit will continue to move at St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound. Come Holy Spirit come.

Faithfully,

Father Michael +
