Education for Ministry (EfM)

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a four-year program that helps lay people deepen their Christian faith and better understand how God is calling them to live and serve in the world. Developed and administered through the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, EfM has been forming Christians for ministry for more than 50 years.

While the name may sound academic, EfM is a program for lay people who want to grow in faith, understanding, and Christian service. Through study, prayer, theological reflection, and conversation in a small-group setting, participants learn to connect Christian faith and tradition with the experiences and questions of everyday life.

Over the four years, participants explore Scripture, Christian history, theology, ethics, and spirituality while developing the practice of theological reflection. And because four years can sound like a very long commitment when life is already full, EfM asks participants to commit to just one year at a time. Sometimes the easiest way to begin something meaningful is simply to begin.
